About Acai Berries
The Acai Berry is
a relatively small black purple berry and is commonly pronounced a-sigh-ee. Resembling a blueberry
or grape it is darker and smaller. The Acai has a big seed and a small amount of pulp. This fruit
is now commonly used in ice cream, energy juices, and select energy bars with granola. Used for
many generations by Brazilian natives, the Acai Berry has 10 times the anti-oxidants of grapes
and double the antioxidants of blueberries.
Alternative health uses for the Acai Berry are becoming very popular. While somewhat new to the United States, Acai has been known for centuries around the world to many cultures for its health qualities. To see the full benefits of Acai one must understand what the Acai Berry is and what it does.
What is Acai?
Acai is indigenous to the Amazon rainforest and is distinctly purple in color. The fruit can be found in the thick palms that grow in these forests which can reach as tall as 90 feet! The Acai Berry grows individually unlike cherries that grow in bunches like bananas. Because of its versatility and nutritional properties the Acai Berry is quickly becoming known as the “wonder fruit”. Some of its characteristics include:
- Omega fats (the good kind, unlike the saturated fats found in fast food)
- Amino acids
- Electrolytes
- Antioxidants
- Protein
- Vitamins A, B1 and E
Known in the Amazon for its astonishing health benefits, Acai is also a great compliment for food. It can also aid in the treatment of skin irritation, digestive issues, insomnia, and even sexual dysfunction. The Acai Berry is also low in sugar!
